Wife and I have felt the need to analyze this a lot on facebook and recently had a nice conversation about it. We decided that it's basically that they create visions of their grandeur in their heads to compensate for...well...who knows what. But us lees know what's up, and we'll be there for them until they snap out of it.

Honestly I'm not sure...I went head first into gatherings. I've come to the conclusion that gatherings are definitely not what first timers expect them to be. There is a lot of socializing with very friendly, welcoming people. It seems to me the only difference between a munch and gathering is a munch is shorter, and there's no tickling involved. I say if you're even considering going, but are wanting to know some people beforehand, go to a munch or meet with some people locally for dinner. People have always been AWESOME about first timers and making them feel welcome and included (or as much so as newcomers will allow. You can't force them to talk or participate, only offer the opportunity.) If you're too shy to participate in the tickling aspect, you don't have to. But I highly recommend and believe it's an experience you'll wish you decided to have sooner.
