Ultima VI? Never really played that one....is it the same perspective and gameplay? Thing I liked about U8 was the magic backpack that could be loaded with anything! .

I can't speak for hard core Civ 2 fans because I didn't play that long enough to give a credible judgement. However, I can say that the most notable differences between the past Civs and Civ 4 is the amount of mundane actions you can automate.
Units can be set to "auto explore" and will do just that reasonable well. Workers can be set to either auto improve the city resource tiles or just improve the road network or both (not sure if this was present in Civ 3 since I didn't really play it).
The graphics are definitely vastly improved while the animations and sound really make the land feel alive. Game play is definitely very deep and rewarding to those who know what they are doing. For those who don't, the learning curve was a lot less steep than when I was trying to pick up Civ 2, though the user interface could have been a little more intuitive for true beginners.
All in all, it's lots of fun. All Civ fans should definitely check it out. 🙂
