What are your favourite computer/video games?

Ultima VI? Never really played that one....is it the same perspective and gameplay? Thing I liked about U8 was the magic backpack that could be loaded with anything! .

Ok, I'm dangerously dating myself here.
And no, it's not a pun about making love to the person I love most...

😉

...

Ultima VI was not unlike Ultima VII: top-down view, a whole group of heroes, and the whole Sosaria to roam.

It gave life to a genre, with two sequels based off the same graphic enginge: Martian Dreams and Savage Empire.

...

It was one of the last games actually supporting both older and newer technology such as CGA *and* VGA, internal audio and Adlib.
Following Ultima VI, Ultima VII had a custom-tailored memory driver, ominously named "Voodoo", and it only supported VGA and Sound Blaster.

Ultima VIII was a complete departure because it featured a real isometric engine, a sleek GUI [whereas U6 had many clunky, cluttering bars] and arcade-ish combat - so you can guess just how different U6 and U7 could be from U8 and U9.

Yet U6 was *captivating*.
I still have fond memories of it.

Few games have since managed to be as engrossing for me.

My favorites:

Pc - Deus Ex, Diablo I & II, All the Theif games.

Console - All the marios, Final fantasy 7 &10, Amplitude

Arcade - Dance dance revolution, metal slug, marvel vs capcom.

As for Civ 4, I've already decided to get it. I've tried a little of Civ 2 and Civ 3, only barely scratching the surface. I'm thus probably not going to be a good judge of Civ 4, but I'll try to give a review when I've tried Civ 4.

Alrighty, after being stuck in Civ 4 for a few days, I have emerged with +10 to Eyebags and +15 to Myopia.

I can't speak for hard core Civ 2 fans because I didn't play that long enough to give a credible judgement. However, I can say that the most notable differences between the past Civs and Civ 4 is the amount of mundane actions you can automate.

Units can be set to "auto explore" and will do just that reasonable well. Workers can be set to either auto improve the city resource tiles or just improve the road network or both (not sure if this was present in Civ 3 since I didn't really play it).

The graphics are definitely vastly improved while the animations and sound really make the land feel alive. Game play is definitely very deep and rewarding to those who know what they are doing. For those who don't, the learning curve was a lot less steep than when I was trying to pick up Civ 2, though the user interface could have been a little more intuitive for true beginners.

All in all, it's lots of fun. All Civ fans should definitely check it out. 🙂

oh, you people.

devil crash and mr. driller and tempest 2000 and galaga 88 and rez and...space harrier?

you modern kids, living your lives at a breakneck pace.

anything older than a week is ancient!

Nah, make that prehistoric 😛

But seriously, some old games have more fun in them then many recent games.

I've played 5 years of Starcraft & Starcraft : Brood War before I got bored... it is simply the best game I've ever played... Not once did I get tired of it during the 5 years. It had the best storyline you could ever think of, the balance of the three races was simply too good... I mean there was nothing that could not be defeated or would have the edge over some other race.

Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 1 : Opposing Force (didn't like Blueshift that much, doesn't have the... charm over me) are and remains one of my favorite games... I'm now playing it yet again, the singleplayer campaign. GMan is the best part of the story and it kept me going all the time. I just wanted to know what (and who) he is and what does he do? Just loved the part in Half-Life : Opposing Force, where GMan smacks the door right to your face and you see your buddies taking off with a helicopter... damn I loved it. The GMan just straightened his tie and brushed dirt away from his suit... lol. The part where the firedoor behind you closed and one superior just said: "Shephard, get to the hangar, that's an order!" 😀

Unreal Tournament 1 (Don't like 2003 or 2004 AT ALL... hate 'em with their masses of laser weapons and with the "jumping in the air" (double jump) and all the robots and aliens... no thanks. I like the basic "military" theme in the 1st UT) is one of the best FPS games you can play on LAN with a friend along with CS... UT is much better if you just have a few players...

Diablo II & Diablo II : Lord of Destruction are from Blizzard also, as is Starcraft.
Didn't play it that much, never played LoD through... Well anyhow I really digged the storyline, although Starcraft remains the best game Blizzard ever made (just my oppinion)...

It's funny... Although I played Warcraft III & Warcraft III : The Frozen Throne since they came to shops, never really liked them... the balance in them was purely ... won't say the word I have in mind, and compared to Starcraft the storyline was WEAK!

Starcraft has this weird thing about it... once you've played it, every other RTS feels like they're made in a day and can interest no one... atleast that goes for me.

Almost forgot:
Command & Conquer 1 (Non-official name: Tiberian Dawn) is also one of the best games I've played and has a really rich storyline

you should play some herzog zwei.

i'm so hooked on F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) and Quake 4 right now! that F.E.A.R. is so kickass and spooky, and the weapons and gameplay rock. 😎

😀 Thanks for the review, I was looking for something like that!

Ok, here are just a few for me.
Starcraft. Hey, I've got to mention it. I'm not usually an RTS fan, but this one drew me in.
TIE Fighter. It gives you a new perspective on the Star Wars universe. Besides, you get to shoot down Rogue Squadron in a couple of missions!
Jedi Knight: This is one of the first games, maybe the first, to let you really do all of the things a Jedi can, and it does it well. I always hated that falling cargo ship level though :grind_tee
Lego Star Wars. Yeah, it sounds like a kid's game, but it's fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and it gives possibly the widest array of playable characters I've ever seen in a Star Wars title.
Goldeneye 007. One of the first great FPS titles, or the one that made them mainstream. Multiplayer in this one is a blast, literally!
Tony Hawk's Underground. A really good skating game. Good physics, and a lot of skaters. The second one had a few more features, but in my opinion it didn't capture the fun of the first one.
Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee. I liked these because they took the old Nintendo characters and put them into an interesting fighting game that allows us to answer the question of what would happen if they ever met up with each other.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Thus far, I'd say this is still the best LOZ title out there. It does a great job of telling the story of the battles with Ganon. The graphics just looked amazing, and it wasn't too easy or too hard. And no three-day time limit!
Those are just the first ones to come to mind. I might add more later 😎

I'm not sure how one can actually stop a 12 carrier assault. I actually tried, with a squadron of valkyries and a team of 12 goliaths with the improved range upgrade for their rockets. It was mostly a draw; I managed to destroy all intercepters from all carriers (I was shocked, it was my first) as well as two carriers, but half my force was wiped out. I had to retreat back to base as the carriers pressed on, simply churning out more intercepters.

Oh my....Herzog Zwei has got to be the best oldie RTS ever. Extremely addictive and exciting to play, especially with a friend. I still have the Sega Genesis emulator installed with Herzog Zwei in it 😀

I was always a huge fan of video games since the day I bought my first NES and super SNES, so I'd have to say those were amongst my few favourite games... Duck hunt, bomberman, starfox.... all so original and yet so fun! hehe

Nowadays I'm more of an Xbox fan (gave up on constantly upgrading my computer for $$ reasons), so now I'd have to say I am more into Halo, Halo 2, and some of those incredibly life-sucking RPG games like morrowind...

Honestly though, the best PC game I ever played was X-wing... But that was back in the day when having a 486-66 was the thing to have. :weird:

My Favourite Computer Games... hhmmm

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 - Mega Drive/Genisis

VectorMan - Mega Drive/Genisis

Teddy Boy - Sega Master System

Ultimate Doom - PSX

Tomb Raider 1 & 2 - PSX

GTA Series - Playstation

Half Life 1/2 - PC

Star Wars Battlefront II - PC

Metal Gear Solid 1/2/3 ( 4 most probably when its released ) - Playstation

Desert Strike/Urban Strike/Nuclear Strike/Soviet Strike - Mega Drive/PSX

Resident Evil 4 - GameCube

Metroid Prime 1/2 - GameCube

theres a few... i could go on all night... cause i need a life :|

on the subject of mega drive games, i've been playing an awful lot of psycho pinball lately.

Yup, PC, just played it 10 minutes ago....I loved it, however, it was over way too soon....and the ending was sad. However, I'm hoping that they'll have a 2nd one! 😀

Yeah, I agree, waayyy too short... Although I played it on Xbox, so it may have been a bit different.

(If I tried running it on my busted old PC it the CPU would probably curl up and find a dark place to die). 🙄

You know, when I started this thread, I was doubtful about the response. I didn't realise that there are soooo many gamers among the tickling community. Looks like it would be lucrative to develop a tickle fight game along the lines of Street Fighter or King of Fighters, hehehe

kyokushinkai, your avatar is very cool. Really love the look of fancy storm trooper helmets.
