What is your opinion about Obama

I am just honestly worried that he was not born in this country.

John McCain was not born in this country. He was born in Panama. Panama is NOT a part of the United States.

Barack Obama was born in this country. He was born in Hawaii - which is part of the United States.

i still have people who think west virginia is part of virginia..gesh

I will admit that I slant liberal and am no fan of George W. Bush, and my vote will be going to Obama. That being said, I'm not averse to a debate about the issues, where I may or may not be misinformed or where someone else might hold a differing opinion. I WANT to know about the issues, to hear other viewpoints, and to give my own in kind. If you feel that Obama lacks the experience to be the President, then that's your opinion and you are entitled to it. (But by the same token, what then makes Sarah Palin so great? Oh wait, I can't ask that, because I'm either a liberal trying to tear her down pointlessly or sexist. I'm sorry but the circus about this woman DOES cheese me off to an extent.)

Rant aside, what disturbs me somewhat is when I engage a conservative in a debate, be it in real life or over the Internet. I feel like that I'm always the one trying to be reasonable - yes, I can see how you might view this issue in that way, I don't think it's a bad idea but this might be better - and that in return for my trouble I'm met with Republican sound bites and attack ad myths. I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong, but it feels like debating a conservative is an exercise in talking with someone who has made up their mind ten years ago and offers unfounded attacks instead of debate, such as in the whole Obama-raises-taxes thing. (He may have to now to pay for the financial mess.)

But I seriously don't get it. I can say that I don't like McCain, I think he's impulsive, hotheaded, and his condescension and proclivity for military activities is not what we need in a world where mistrust of the United States runs high. And I know that no matter how much the candidates claim to be running a "clean" campaign, sooner or later they get down in the mud for a bare-knuckled brawl. But I at least try to keep objectivity when I view an Obama attack ad or claim. Maybe it's just my personal nature, or maybe the loads of work I did to separate fact from opinion as part of my college major. I just feel like so few others do this, and take the Republican (or Democratic, but I feel Republicans are much more in the wrong on this issue) sound bites and smears at face value, then parrot them in the face of argument.

Sorry if I sound a bit bitter, but there is a lot at stake for this country, and I'm afraid that people aren't going to consider the issues before they vote, whichever way it may be. There's too much incivility already.

P.S. If Obama was not born in the US or a US territory, he is constitutionally unable to become the President. That would have already disqualified him were it true. It's why Alexander Hamilton could never have been President despite being a Founding Father. (And also that he died. 😛)

there are just so many irrational people here who can't get their information straight but are afraid to look like douchebags and won't admit that they don't know as much as they claim to know, and then when you ask them something they say something pretty douchebaggish that confirms their douchebagness

alaska is another common victim of the 52 states of america clause

so is boston

(yes boston is thought to be a state)

I didn't know Obama was born in Hawaii,I thought hew was born in another country,or atleast that's what I heard

haha who did you hear it from, your hairdressers hahahahahahahahahahahahahah aofjdsofadosajf dsa lolOLoLOlolOLOLoloLOLol hahahahahahahaha h ALOLOlolol

I like Obama and will vote for him and Biden. I must admit that I gave McCain a look, but his do-nothing views on the middle class are just too much of a return to Bush for me to consider him. Picking Palin as his running mate was the nail in his coffin for a lot of Americans.

It's not that Palin isn't smart, accomplished and worldly...Okay, it really is those things.

ahh admitting that you don't know is all the difference..and irrationality doesn't have anything to do with knowing the states..it's a matter of the teachers who taught one geography..and not doing their job properly...

my brother in law...a college graduate...for his honey moon he wanted to cruise to Hawaii, thinking it was off the east coast..so i guess he is a douch bag..

and i call no one a douch bag...

And I, being a conservative, run into the same problems when I debate with liberals. Many seem to think that the louder you shout and more you interrupt, the more points you get. Hence, I, as I presume you do as well, do at least a little homework before I enter the fray.

The constitution requires that the candidate be a US citizen by birth, which means that (1) you have to have been born in the US or it's territories or (2) born of US citizens stationed overseas (ex. one of my classmates from K through high school was born in Germany was her parents were stationed at an army base there, but she was still a US citizen by birth). If I missed anything there, anyone can feel free to correct me ACCURATELY.

With McCain's dad being a military man, my guess is that he and his wife were station in Panama or the Canal Zone (which was at that time a US territory) when Sen. McCain was born. That is why he and Obama-rama can be president and, for example, Gov. Schwarzenegger can't. Ahh-nold emigrated after being born an Austrian citizen.

Wwhat the hell are you talking about man? He did not call anyone a pig with lipstick, unless oyu are reading between the lines...but he didn't do it blatantly that is for sure. And why would Palin go and make a silly little remark so simlilar to his anyhow? I forgot the actually thing she said but it went along the lines of, I think, "what's the difference between a woman and a pig? *points at her mouth* Lipstick." Booiah! Ship Shop She Shang!!!!

Actually, the line from Palin was "What's the difference between a soccer mom and a pitbull? Lipstick."

There was never any comparisons to women and pigs and I believe Obama's comment came after. And from what I recall, it wasn't derogatory. He's smarter than that, like him or not.

I think the real question that's on everybody's mind is:

Michelle Obama vs Sarah Palin

Who would win in a no-holds-barred bikini-clad jello-wrasslin' contest?

I would not want to see Sarah Palin in a bikini. I'm sorry.

Michelle Obama has that Claire Huxtable thing goin' on, though. Rrrrrar.

Love him, hate him, indifferent, think he is the anti-Christ, whatever, i gotta say this: The man can talk! ( which supports the anti-Christ theory [not my theory] )

lol....some said that about Bush...but Bush couldn't string two consecutive words together so that disqualified him..

I think I heard Obama put two together once, after a three hour meeting with his 30+ handlers and teleprompter programmers...LOL

I try not to insult people unless I get insulted first, at which point any actual debate is tossed to the wind and as you said it's time to see who can shout their side's talking points louder. That doesn't go anywhere, but lately I've been having very one-sided debates with conservatives and made this post out of frustration.

As for the US Citizen thing, I'm pretty sure you're correct. I remembered that the Canal Zone was US territory when John McCain was born but probably neglected to mention that; I did forget the second provision for being a US citizen from birth. Regardless, as you said, there are no constitutional complications for either candidate. I just think the "who was born where" argument is not only pointless but it's more an attempt to take a cheap shot at either candidate's patriotism.

I'll say that I disagree with John McCain's stance on many issues, but I'd never say for one moment that he doesn't care about America.

I think this is waaaaaaaaay too open-ended a thread, it has potential to turn into a real fight.
In my opinion, Obama may not be the perfect candidate for presidency, but he's a damn sight better than Mccain. Nobody is perfect, but I think Obama is the best prospect America has had for a president in many years. Things have been going down hill ever since Bill Clinton took presidency all those years ago, and they just been getting worse and worse.
From what I have followed of Mccain (and I'm really into the campaign), He is the very definition of a politician, by which I mean he lies repeatedly, is only interested in his own interests, and will only accept and recite information which shows him in a good light.
it reminds me very much of this quote from George Orwell: "Political language -- and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists -- is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind."

With all the dozens of things a person can complain about regarding Obama, I don't think pretending the guy can't speak--extemporaneously or otherwise--is gonna float.
