I call it "situational useless information". I'll walk into a diner with my friends - "Want to hear the history of the diner?" Someone will buy a Pepsi - "Want to hear the history of Pepsi?" Someone will be eating cornflakes - "Want to hear the history of cornflakes?" And so on. 😛
