who wishes they lived during the middle ages?

Well yeah, but ya know... does anyone ever actually KEEP those promises? 😛 Growing a beard, drinking mead, and screaming "ODIN!" as you cleave some random British monk with your chopper is just too gosh darn fun! 😀

Excellent point.....mine was to quit failing.....THAT didn't last long at all..... 😛

I'd like to go back in time there with a flashlight, a shotgun (with ammo, of course) and a lighter. I'd be the ruler of the known world within a week!

I hate to burst bubbles, but the evidence for tickling actually being used as punishment is pretty scarce. So it probably wouldn't even be worth the plagues, Inquisition, etc.

Anybody think of what it would be like to live back when getting tickled was common punishment?
I always like reading that account of a goat licking the feet of someone for hours.....:turtle:
So would you go somewhere like then if you could time travel?

Despite what certain hopeful fetishists would like you to believe, tickling wasn't a common torture or punishment during the middle ages.

But to hell with the tickling aspect. My ancestors were VIKINGS, damn it, and I'd trade my modern cubicle for a longship and a battle axe ANY day. If you ever find that time machine, count me in. 😀

This...It was mostly like putting people on stretching racks and popping their joints out of the sockets and gauging eyes out... YAY FOR THE TUDORS! 😛

When I was in England we went on all these tours through castles and stuff, and tickling fantasy completely aside, it seems like such a romantic time to have lived. Of course they had their struggles and blah blah blah, but what I saw, I loved.

We tend to romantize the "good old times". Even my grandmother used to tell me all the nice times she had during WW2! We tend to forget those old times weren't so good even when we were there during them!

The Middle Ages were everything but romantic!

Or you'd be drawn, quartered and burned! 🙂

Only if plague and famine didn't get him first! 😀

Dude, my ancestors were English and Irish. Our ancestors definitely did battle many, many centuries ago when the Vikings raided the English coastlines.

As a Medievalist, I love the Middle Ages. From a distance. I'd be burned as a heretic in all likelihood.

And I don't want to live without toilet paper 😱

Sure they did. If you lived in a hovel, its called the pot. If you lived in a castle. It was called a garderobe. And this bad boy had shaped wood seats in the best establishments 😀

The Teutonic Knights even built whole "Sanitary Towers" for their castles. Look at a picture of Marienburg Castle. There's a tower way out on one side with a covered walkway to it. That'd be the toilet tower.

Sorry, castle geek.

Could always just ask Venray! He was there!

Yeah, just dump it in the moat. 😀

And drink beer all day because the water isn't clean enough to drink 😀

And as an added bonus if you're the lord you could pretty much grab a peasant woman and take her to your dungeon. :evilha:

Oh c'mon people! Don't take him so seriously! LOL 😀 He's just talking about the tickling part. So maybe it never happened regularly but it's fun to fantasize right? 😛

Personally, I love the middle ages. Always wanted to be a knight rescuing some damsel. I know, I know... plague, famine, hygiene, blah, blah, blah... but it's still fun to fantasize.

And I'm in agreement with you here. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest perhaps he was talking about the fantasy part of it all - it doesn't have to get so serious lol. Lots of folks celebrate just the "fun things" during that time or Renaissance Fairs and places like Medieval Times wouldn't be so popular.

Last time I was at a ren fair they put a guy in the stocks and threw vegetables at him.....I don't know if you'd consider that fun! 🙂 The thing is, on ren fairs people portrait stuff from the middle ages to be fun that really wasn't all that much fun.

Call me strange but I think that would be fun! I have a few people in mind that I'd like to see veggies being tossed at.

And yes, those fairs do focus on the fun stuff but so do a lot of themed fairs here. Hell, I was at one last summer that had a "western" theme. Trust me, not all was fun and dandy back in those times but yet so many people are western buffs and love the whole "cowboy" thing. Those guys had it rough as well but the festivals are a way of having fun while learning about history. Call me an optimist but fun is good.

Of course it's nice to have fun, but honestly I believe stuff like that should be seen as fun and not a lesson in history! 🙂

I see what you're saying but to each their own. 🙂

What about you Angel and Rhiannon to go to Muslim Spain, and walk about in the gardens of La Alhambra, among peaches and orange trees, exquisite architecture, dressed in the finest silk from China, wearing exquisite jewelery, taking a bath in water perfumed with roses. Or naked in the top of a tower, far from profane ears, near the mountains of Cordoba, rolling naked among silk pillows and being tickled to death by whoever you fancy to be there.
That is also the Medieval times...on the muslim side. And with a bit of fantasy, of course.

And as usual being stinky rich, which is good in any time and place.

I mean no disrespect each one bring her own people to the party.

Yeah, more money would be a good thing. :jester:
Ah it's all good. I'd be just as happy hanging out and having a few beers. I'm a simple gal.

the middle ages were no fun if you were a peasant, but life was good if you were in charge.
