Worst Rock Song?

I work with a lovely young woman named Roxanne. She HATES her name solely because of that song. Everyone sings it at her as if they're the first person to ever consider doing so.

I remember hearing that song for the very first time back in the day and thinking "Well, this band's got no future!" 😀

As for Styx, they're another bunch of obviously talented dudes who have decided to produce radio-friendly cheeze rather than music!

😉 Other than being the world's highest earning musicians in 2008, Best British Group of 1982, Outstanding Contribution to Music in 1985, and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (which admittedly doesn't mean jack. I mean Rush isn't even in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and they're the band with the third most consecutive Gold/Platinum albums of all time 😛issed)

Sorry, I'm just a giant Police/Sting fan.

Though I do agree with the Styx song :<

I was okay with The Police except for the times they went into white-boy reggae mode. That shit just hurt. "De bed too big bid out you, de bed too big...". :unwell:

I was okay with Styx except for their attempts at conceptual themes. Generally, though, of that ilk, give me Kansas or even Toto over Styx.

That was low :<

It's true

But it's still low

Awww...I'm sorry. If it makes you feel better, I think Sting is a much better artist NOW then he was BACK THEN. He's song "Desert Rose' is pretty cool. ^_^

Picture - Nickelback. Effin Terrible.

That's a shame. A good deal of Nickelback's music is nice to listen too. I guess every band has that one song though...

Good thing Grace Jones picked up that tune, dusted it off and did it right!

What's everyone's feeling about the Donna Summer version of "Macarthur Park"?

I have to admit, any time I hear "Macarthur Park", I just start laughing.

It's almost just as bad. Compared to other African American singers, Donna just falls short...sometimes she's almost painful to listen too.

Awww.....I love Donna Summer....always play her version of "Con Te Partiro"

I'm starting to wonder about something. These are the things that people don't like. But what is it that you guys think is actually good. I hear things like what kopforer said about Styx... "radio-friendly cheeze rather than music."

That makes me wonder... if say, Mr. Roboto is radio-friendly cheeze, offer counterpoint. What is "music" to work against its cheezy-ness?

I want to know because nearly everything mentioned that's not good is something I like. Macarthur Park is a hideous song and needs to be banned.

But I know my tastes won't jive with most of you. I hate most music after about 1996. It just. Makes. Me. Yawn. I dislike all this crufty stuff like Disturbed and Drowning Pool and well...

Good chance if you like it and it's from this decade, I despise it. I listen to music to feel good and have a good time and hear pleasant sounds. If I want a deep message, I'll go read a book.

PS Johnny Cash will kill Disturbed.

Oh, believe me, Jimmy, feelings will get hurt in a thread such as this. Keep in mind, though, it's just others' opinions, and that this is primarily a thread for worst songs, not favorite ones. I was flabbergasted when the TV character said with such assurance that Tull's "Bungle" was the worst song in rock history. As if it was common knowledge. That's a tall fucking order.*

Plus, there's the whole "prog-rock" genre to consider, not to mention the awful library of Neil Sadaka songs!

*The problem(as I see it) with picking on Tull is, they are one of those groups where many of their very BEST songs never made it to radio. I know that's true of alot of groups, but it's very VERY true of Jethro Tull.

My feelings aren't hurt. If anything, I'm laughing at the people who can't just listen to tunes and enjoy how they sound, since after all... that's all that matters.

I'm just curious to find out what a lot of folks consider to be good. I can agree to disagree, but I suppose I have a different mindset as someone who plays rock and roll music. That mindset is that no music is bad music, there's only things that you don't like the sound of. The issue with the commercial world is that the idea is to make dollars, not necessarily be artistically credible. If you throw a I IV V progression together, shuffle the beat, sing about shaking it up, and people make you famous the world over, then so be it. That lets you do things like go on to make up absolute nonsense and have people think that you're incredibly deep.

This makes you richer.

That's all that matters in the end, though. Making a living.

That post reads like a contradiction.

How's that? Is it because I don't get butthurt or because I'm able to to think so openly? It doesn't matter to me what you don't like. I'm just curious about what people think is good, but you know what?

I get the feeling that nobody wants to share that, so forget it. Once more, everybody please, just go right on ignoring me. :rolleyes

Well, we're all kind of dissing on each other but it's in jest. Sharing guilty pleasures and what not, but the comment that you're laughing at people who can't just listen to music that we enjoy, it's kind of pointed, a personal insult. Insulting people makes it sound like your feelings really are hurt.

Also you go into about how music is all just opinion, but then you talk about people making music just for money and cast that in a negative light, and while I agree some people do that, if it is all just a matter of opinion, it doesn't matter if you're favorite song is Beethovan's 5th or the finesse the best a man can get comercial song.

I agree that music is all just a matter of opinion, but I don't see the reason to look down upon people who are just voicing their opinion. This thread is asking people what they think is the worst rock song, there's no reason to laugh at people for answering that question, right?

Perhaps we should add music to the list(politics/religion/race relations/etc.) of discussions which are verboten? :huh

lmao! I don't think we should go that far, Rick!

I'm used to having my music choices dissed, I've learned to turn a deaf ear to it.

My fave song from the 80s is a one hit wonder (Nena - "99 Luftballons"), my fave act is Madonna (I hear all the bad "*****" comments) and my fave genre of music is freestyle.

What I find peculiar is that Jules' question became such a hot button. He did not get his feelings hurt by people's choices for "worst song." In fact, all he wanted to know was by what criteria were the songs being considered bad, in effect, what rules of good music were they breaking that they were branded as bad songs.

I have to say: my whole reason for starting the topic was the negligible hope of finding some rock song, any rock song, that others considered worse than Tull's "Bungle". Tastes and opinions are what they are, and everybody's got `em.

I will say, I always dug the cover for the album that "Bungle in the Jungle" is on. I wanna hear "War Child" again nao! 🙂

I think that everyone has their own personal set of "worst songs". Each one will be different, having on it songs that others love.

o spam bot please go away...

and i still love Bungle so there..:stickout

DUDE! This is totally off my own topic, but you look a little like Bert the Conqueror(one of my two current favorite TV shows) in that shot!

I have to admit, this spambot has at least come up with some unintentionally hilarious, wildly memorable sentences. I swear, I'm that close to utilizing parts of the following as my site signature:

"He is clear in what He asks and clear in what He offers. The choice is up to us.Isn't it incredible that NY Escort God leaves the choice up to us? Think about it. There are many things in life we can't choose. We can't, for NY Escorts example, choose the weather. We can't control the economy. We can't choose whether or not we are NY Asian Escorts born with a big nose or blue eyes or a lot hair. We can't even choose how people respond to us. But we NY Asian Escort can choose where we spend eternity. "

On the topic of prog-rock/metal that was mentioned, I'd probably have to say most of 10,000 days falls into my "worst rock song ever" category. I mean, I like Maynard and I like most of Lateralus, but 10,000 Days just turns into a snore fest after Jambi and nothing ever really catches up to how awesome Vicarious was.

Oh well, I prefer Dream Theater and Rush any day of the week to Tool (though I have to admit Parabol/Parabola together is an incredible piece of work) 😛
