Is World War III Approaching

Umm if we became more aggressive, some of our people would die as well, If you want to go in yourself and fight ok, but dont be so quick to suggest that OTHER people go and die for you

You crack me up. How in the hell can you make a comment like that not knowing who I am or what I do or anything about me. What if I was in the military? What If I was an FBI agent? What if I was a government leader? Luckily for you I am none of these. In any event, I would go if I was drafted with no problem. I love my country and I would die for it if needed. If we need to start drafting people then so be it. I say this as a person who would be eligable to be drafted I am not crippled or anything that would keep me from war. I wonder if everyone who is so vociferous on this site could say the same? I guess it doesn't really matter I can only speak for myself. By the way, the people in the armed forces at this time are VOLUNTEERS that means they are there of their own free will to protect and die for this country if needed. They all knew full well when they joined that military conflict is a very real possibility and so with that death is also very real possibility. In order to resolve this yes some of our people must die if I am one of them then so be it. I guess it boils down to civilians parrishing from acts of terrorism because we are too soft on them or some of our military personnel who are in essence paid to defend and die for the purpose of rooting out these evil sons of bitches to protect our civilians. If there is anyone here who is familiar with military operations, some military deaths are considered acceptable. In WWII the attack on the main island of Japan was going to be a costly one for the American military in terms of life lost. But, it was a cost that we were prepared to pay to end this war once and for all. Lucky for us and the hundreds of thousands of military personnel that would have died that Truman grew a set of nuts and used the bomb instead.

Thats right you can only speak for yourself. Some people have died NEEDLESSLY in wars in operations that were HORRIBLY bungled, My next door neighbor is a vet from Vietnam, and everytime I look at him I can see this haunted glaze in his eyes. He's been in and out of psych wards becaue of the horror he went through. And what thanks did he get?? People treat him like a freak. No one goes up to him and says " Hey thanx for defending the country." NO, hes an outcast...........Thats what puting his life on the line for his country got him! War isnt all honor and glory, wake up.

omg, i agree with ice!

lolol
i was in the military, as i have stated before. i can tell you all, i didnot sign on to fight, and die for this country! i signed up to (as gen, patton said) make the other poor dumb son of a bitch die for his!
no soldier in the american military enlists to go and die, trust me.
ice, have you told your neighbor thank you for serving?
the problem with the viet nam vets, is 2 fold. the press here showed them in a very bad light, and the anti war folks made it worse. second, to a cinical extent, it is viewed that they (the vets who were there) lost in viet nam. and who cheers for a looser.
i don't hold to either of those feelings myself. but i have read in several papers that those are widely held belief.

What Is the purpose of our military? When you sign up for the military what are you signing up for? Is there a job description for the US military? When you signed up did the thought ever cross your mind that you may have to fight and die for your country? If not, why did you sign up? It is kind of like going to school to be an auto mechanic never dreaming that you would ever have to fix a car. Areenactor can you answer any of these questions? For Ice, Vietnam was an unfortunate situation. I agree that it was bungled but it was a politcal action not a military action. Vietnam would have had a much different outcome if it was a pure military action and the politicians would have kept their noses out of it. I am calling for an agressive pure military action to end this age of terrorism so we can avoid a debacle like Vietnam. I to know many Vietnam vets struggling with their past, in fact I am related to 2. Both of my relatives agree with my stance on terrorism in fact one thinks we should use a nuke in order to actually save the lives of our military.

Nukes...

While I fall directly on the side of saving our soldiers lives at the expense of other armies soldiers, I think we need to hold off on the nuclear option until we find ourselves placed in a situation that precludes our other, nearly equally good, options. The campaign in Iraq and Afghanistan showed what a superior Air Force can do to an enemy with no capability to counter this tactic. Supply lines are cut, vital services interrupted and troop movement is curtailed. Basically we shut down nearly ALL options for the enemy save an all out ground assault by their forces, which is suicidial against a foe with air cover. They wither and die gradually...military targets are continually revisited and kept "down". In some ways, talon, a nuke might be more merciful...what we do is the equivalent of knocking them down and stepping on their solar plexus for a few weeks.... Q

answers to talons questions

be happy to give my opinions. i joined to serve my country. i did not realize what my m.o.s. was till after i got to basic training, then HOO BOY! was i suprised, lol.
i knew i might have to fight, we all did. i knew i may have to kill people, but i never was taughted, or trained that i should die! we were trained to kill the enemy, and to avoid dieing at all costs! it costs too much to train us!
in other countries military they did train their troops to think about dieing for the motherland, or fatherland, what have you. but the american military doesn't. the marines mention it, but not the other branches so much.
also remember, many people enter the military to do jobs that have counterparts in the civilian world. car mechanic as you mentioned. a mechanic would not expect to be put in harms way. cooks, typists, etc. think of the military as a medium sized city, with all the support there in. all of those people are not even trained to fight like combat troops. after basic training, you go to your job training.
i hope this answers a few questions. feel free to ask anything.
steve

Thanks for answering Steve. I think you may have misunderstood me though. What I meant was not that soldiers should die but the possibilty that they could die is a reality. The way I see it all military go through basic training to learn how to fight and protect our country first and foremost then if during peacetime when their training is done they go onto other responsabilities. I do believe though, if it was a wartime situation the number of volunteers would be greatly reduced because these people know the routine would be training and then fighting and possibly dying. Whatever soldiers do during peacetime is only temporary if a war comes along all soldiers have their battle responsabilities, correct me if I am wrong.

I would say holding off on the nukes at least for know is probably a good ideal. One does not have to use nukes that are in the megaton range. They now have tactical nuclear weapons about 1-3 kilotons in size. This is smaller than the ones dropped on Japan which were about 40 kilotons I think. These small nukes are very good at blowing up things like caves and can be made not to detonate until they are at a certain depth. This avoids almost all of the fallout problems. Now where you would use a device that can collapse a entire network of caves in one felled swoop is beyond me. Anyone have any ideals? 😉

military duties

only the marine corp. says that all it's troops are combat troops. they do train all their troops to be fighters. with the other 3 branches, it's different. hell i've met air force, and navy guys who told me they never fired an m-16, not even in basic!

when you say that enlistment slows in time of war, there i may agree with you. these days people are too self centered. back in ww2, they lined up around the block, waiting to sign up. but i have to stress to you again, very few enlistees think about the possibility of being killed. they are trained to think about killing the enemy, and staying alive.

as for jobs in the military, as i said, only the marines expect all their people to fight. the army has only about 50% or so that are combat prepared, and expected to fight. kina scarry when you think about it huh? maybe one day i'll tell you about my own experience, lol
steve

Get real you guys!!!!

To put one marine on the front line, in harms way to defend you and me, takes a great deal of what is known as "logistics", that marine is no use to anyone unless he is well trained well, well educated, well motivated, well armed, well fed and well informed. To make this possible many people are involved in the logistical "tail", I am at a loss to understand why this is "scary"

Red, what do you mean! Don't see a point to your thread can you elaborate please?

Red, I think what Steve is saying is that any soldier *might* be called on to serve as a rifleman, if only in self-defense. How effective he will be depends on the quality of his training, and how current it is. During the Battle of the Bulge, the US Army formed provisional rifle companies out of rear-area clerks, cooks and bakers, etc. Immediately following Dunkirk, the British Army in France did the same (you guys call such units "odds and sods" - GREAT description!) It was fortunate for the men in these units that they didn't have to fight, because they would have gotten hammered.

Despite all this training on how to be a soldier I know many veterans who are still haunted by those they have killed............Its not that easy to kill someone, all of those who are crying for blood I bet half of you wouldnt be able to look a man in the eyes and pull that trigger knowing thats someones father, someones son.

hard to kill

again ice we agree on an issue (lord save me)
back in ww2 the % of soldiers who actuall used their weapon, and killed an enemy was only 15%. the american army saw the problem and changed it's training. today it's over 75% who will be willing to kill. but, also remember, thats with a rifle! at 300 yards!. try it with a knife some time...up close... so you can smell the guys breath...feel him shake..now thats the stuff of night mares.
steve

Areenactor actually agreed with me.......................TWICE!! This is freaking me out :scared:

It's not as hard as you think if you know the other guy is trying to kill you. I have been in the situation not wartime but face to face with death. You would be suprised what you can and will do if you know its kill or be killed. A friend and I were driving through a bad neighborhood late one nite. It was Dec 30 we were going home after a christmas party and decided to take a shortcut. To make a long stroy short we were flagged down by a young lady who seemed to be in distress when we stopped two youths jumped out and assaulted us at gunpoint one guy had a gun to my buddies head the other had a large knife and he was jabbing it in my side. After going through our car and taking anything of value the one kid with the gun to my buddies head decided to change his life forever and pull the trigger effectively killing my friend instantly. I think the guy with the knife on me was shocked his friend did that because for a split second he kind of froze. I, scared shitless, somehow was able to react and grab the guys arm. After the gunshot everybody scramled and began to run including the perps. The guy with the knife and I were the only one left we were both fighting for control of the knife. If anybody was watching it had to look like something right out of a movie we were rolling around on the ground trying to stab each other. Finally, I got some control over the knife and was able to thrust it deep into this guys abdomen. He immediatly stopped strugling I didn't know what to do I jumped up and must of ran 5 blocks blindly before I was able to rationalize what the hell just happened. I somehow made it to a payphone and called 911. My adrenaline was pumping so hard I didn't even realize I had been stabbed twice once in the leg and once in the left hand. A couple of days later they caught the shooter he was in a bar bragging how he killed someone a few days earlier. The guy I stabbed died because he bled to death. Sad thing is the kid who fired the shot was 14 years old the guy I killed was 20 such a sad ending to such short lives. My buddy was 35 and an aspiring civil engineer, what a waste.

Depends on your motivation. My grandfather, an infantryman in WW-I, once killed a German with a pocket knife. He happened to have the knife open in his hand when the man landed on his back in a raid, and used it without hesitation.

There was an occasion when his rifle stopped working in close combat. He defended himself with a sharpened shovel, killed two men and took two prisoners with it. (In case you're wondering, everyone should sharpen his shovel. It makes digging a lot easier.) Weapon of choice for close combat, though, was the trench mace or "mashie" - an issue weapon consisting of a pick handle with a hexagonal 6-lb iron knob on the end.

Gramps did what he had to do to stay alive. Possibly because of that, he was generally a peaceful man in later life unless someone worked hard to piss him off. As for haunted, he had flashbacks for years. It took him about 40 years to sort it out in his mind to where he could talk about it to people who weren't tyled in the same lodge.

His brother, OTOH, LIKED to fight. But that's another story.

Case in point ........................Few people walk away from killing someone and stay the same.

Exactly case in point...........you do what you have to. If you suddenly come face to face with the enemy and you all of a sudden come down with a case of morality the cosequences won't matter because you won't be alive to worry about it.

The problem with hesitation to kill an opponent is dealt with in training and dehumanization of the enemy.Any one who takes the time to look at his opponent and think about the guy's family stands a good chance of never seeing his own again.

Very few think the situation is fun,but when the time comes, it's kill or be killed. The military has made a living at this concept for one hell of a long time.
