Holy epic thread derail!
As far as the OP goes, then I have no issues with the HP books/movies. Books are better than the movies, though in all honesty I think the main reason I'm into them is because I grew up as they came out along with the main characters - they each appealed to me at the time, as has happened with many poeple. And if I enjoy a book at one point, I'll likely watch the movie at some other point in the event it comes out.
Whether or not they're pure literary genius, they're entertaining and at least like some books don't subvert huge fantasy tropes to suit their own ends, at least to the extent that, say, Twilight does. Though I can definitely see how the two are comparable... bloody hardcore fans 😛
As an aside, I was actually almost an extra in the new one. They needed people for a crowd scene at night, contacted my 6th form, but eventually called it off and resolved to use CGI because the actors couldn't make it or something. They actually use the cathedral where I live (Durham) for the shooting. Pity, really, I'm guessing that they were going to be doing a certain death scene...

Why are people hijacking this thread to pat themselves on the back about being oh so sophisticated literature-wise? Straight up, this is the kind of high-horse pomposity that turns folks away, then the same folks who pull this judgemental crap slink over to other forums and whinge about how mean and intolerant people are over here
There's room for both 'great' writing like McCarthy and Foster-Wallace and for light, amusing fare like J.K .Rowling or Dave Barry or even guilty-pleasure pulp like the Twilight series and you don't have to be a child to enjoy them. Not being a humorless git does help though 
Meanwhile, I happen to adore the Harry Potter books and I was 30 yrs old when I started reading them, I'm reading Deathly Hallows right now. The series is just plain fun and involving to many people of many ages; certainly not Faulkner but then some say he was an overwrought hack. And while I love Tolkien's stories I *despise* his dry and tiresome writing style (yeah I said it), I hated the Hobbit and Fellowship...not so much...
I'll have to let you know about the movie, Aimee, Bill and I have a hot date to see it while we're on vacation in Vermont in a few weeks 😀
