Oh my ... I can't believe there isn't a Harry Potter Thread yet!

Aren't opinions wonderful? I remember hearing once that they're like... ...something... ...in so far as everyone has one, and then... ...I guess they must expose them for everyone to see at length and repeatedly..?

Maybe I'm remembering that wrong..? I was never good at clichés. Some are clearly far more skilled.

Oh -- "Variety's the spice of life!" There's one! I don't feel so bad now. 🙂

In any event, I've never read any of the books, but have been told by a friend who has that the movies ripped them to shreds, and now have a lot of explaining to do to make sense of what plot is left... If you liked the first book, therefore, it would probably pay to read the rest, rather than just take the movies at face value.

I have only watched Harry Potter movies and never had the chance to read any of its book. But my mother read them at age 60+ and she loved them a lot.

Why are people hijacking this thread to pat themselves on the back about being oh so sophisticated literature-wise? Straight up, this is the kind of high-horse pomposity that turns folks away, then the same folks who pull this judgemental crap slink over to other forums and whinge about how mean and intolerant people are over here :hmm:

this.

I like Harry Potter. The books are great reads. I thought the movies are good as well, although they don't touch on as much as the writing does.

I hope that doesn't make me some tween loser now.

Okay I look at it this way.....I read a lot of heavy literature on a regular basis, just for fun no other reason.....but having books like Harry Potter and Twilight etc...around are nice because they are on the lighter side.

Even I will admit if you are to serious all the time it is unhealthy. And you can quote that from me, those of you who don't believe I will admit to something like that.

Besides being someone who wants to teach younger children I find it important to know about the things they like, music, books, fashion, whatever so that I can relate to them more then just teaching them an instrument.

I will, when I get a chance and the movie theater isn't ridiculous be seeing the movie. And I have no problem admitting I look forward to seeing it, just as I look forward to the time when the books came out.

The books are better and more detailed than the movies but I still love the movies, and I always forget how much older they've all gotten until HBO runs one of the earlier films 🙂 And you're only a loser if you forget how to have fun and let others have fun as well 😉

Geez what a huge derail. Good work. *rolls eyes*

On topic, I love the books. The movies are ok, but they change/cut a lot out. 🙁

I wasn't trying to pat myself on the back for anything. I was up too damn late, half conscious, and hoping some of the Twilight / Harry Potter fanatics might see something interesting and take a bit of a change of pace. I realize now that'll never happen and that the world is slowly coming to an end with every post of a book other than HP in this thread.

The thread was hijacked, it was a joke, my bad. We can all continue on to the original point of this thread which is the Harry Potter movie. I won't be seeing it, nor any of the others, nor reading any of the other books as I can't relate to it and for some reason, the way JK Rowling writes gets on my nerves.

Fin.

I hope everyone's day can continue peacefully. So sorry. I guess I'm a loser now. :-(

We threw some books on there that are, for the most part, very well written. Some of them have deep resonating cultural significance. Now Euphoricy might dislike Conrad (I know Mairead wasn't a fan of Heart of Darkness either), but hey, I can dig that.

I've been in classrooms and in literary discourse when it comes to the place of the Harry Potter books. If hackney woman schlock like Uncle Tom's Cabin is going to be considered a viable piece of literature in circles, then I do not see why Rowling's series of books will not be either. They will have a place in the canon for children. Whereas Twilight will end up going the way of Goosebumps and fucker off into darkness, I think there might be some merit to the Potter franchise. It's not my cup of tea, but then again, as Bella would put it, I'm a humorless git who thinks the savage humor of Swift is still capable of producing belly laughs.

I do not think they make for great movies, but they are good popcorn fare. Again, probably nowhere near my level. After all, Citizen Kane is far and away the best piece of film ever produced, and I am sure most of the people here haven't even watched that.

As for humorless gits, hey, I thought it was a pretty good prank to pull. If you don't agree, I honestly believe you have no sense of humor, and you need to stop bitching about what me and Mairead do because you guys feel left out of our gathering.

I'm going to see the movie this weekend! But if I can be completely honest...just about every one of those movies pissed me off for one reason or another. For the last one, I wanted to see what cinema magic they could whip up by showing how the pros in there play Quidditch. And guess what, THEY CUT OUT THAT WHOLE SCENE.

Bull.

So I have high hopes for this one. I hear it's a bit more on the scandalous side, and I'm all for some scandal.

I have heard a lot of people say it doesn't follow the book at all .. but make sure you tell me what you think!

It was a decent adaptation and I totally wasn't the only adult at the midnight showing. I have no life...I find enjoyment where I can. ANYTHING (including tickling and posting in GENDIS) to distract my mind from my day to day is a good thing.

The thing I didn't get about this flick (or any of the previous flicks) is I know they have to whittle down the material and get something EXCITING on the screen to attract those who don't read the books. But why oh why... after eliminating some of the vital characters and downplaying the darker sides (like the whole war theme is not focused on at all), why do they write new scenes? The whole opening was pure fiction that wasn't in the book. And adding scenes for Bellatrix? Ewwwwwwwww... just ew. If that's what they had to do to convey the "Evilness" of the deatheaters... I'm a tad disappointed. But I laughed and I cried. And didn't even care that I had to be at work in less than 6 hours.

BTW, for a HP thread, I saw books here that I read in high school. Many were great. Many sucked and I loathed the authors. I respect those who put forward the effort to discuss these and other ideas in an ADULT TICKLING forum. But don't insult everyone's intelligence as a GenX wannabe because you feel your opinion is better than others. Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass were kids' books, too. And the Chronicles of Narnia was also children's fare. But revisiting books that have deeper meaning (and yes, I do think the HP books are such - the classic mythology and world literature references alone are good ways to get people to revisit the classics - oh, and not to mention the many linguistic nuances that are missed by the unwashed, Anglophone masses) is never a bad thing.

Just by worthless (ADULT) opinion of this NON-Harry Potter thread.

You are my current Hero. Expect a giftbasket of whimsically-shaped soaps and fine chocolates :twohugs:

Once again! Another perfectly good thread ruined by people who need attention. Lol.

Who are we to say what's good literature and what's not. If it's selling millions of copies, it's probably good. There you go. Problem solved!

I have seen the movies and read the books. I'm very excited to see it this weekend. I've heard it had great reviews.

As far as literature goes. Who gives a shit what people read! As long as they read. Right?!

Ha, you reminded me of an argument my mom had with my grandmother when I was just 5 yrs old; my grandmother didn't want me reading my beloved Superman comics, she said they weren't 'real' reading and would rot my brain. My mom challenged her to spell "Kryptonite"; she couldn't but *I* could at only 5. End of argument 😎

Never read the Potter books, have no interest in them.I tried reading The Lord of the Rings years ago.Giant snooze fest for me.Could not finish it.And,so what?We like what we like.

Another classic:

It's about a bunch of douchebags trying to dictate what other people shouldn't read.

As for Harry Potter I have read all the books and seen the movies. I enjoy them for the bits of fluff that they are. The are decent fun reading. While I don't thing JK Rowlings writing style is really all that good she was able to create charaters that the reader becomes attatched to. She creates a decently believable world. It's not much different from ours just throw in magic. Now do I think they are the end all be all of literature? No not at all. In my opinion the last book was junk.

The movies while great stand alone actually relating to the books they majorly failed. In my opinion they are going to have difficulty explaining their own ending. Each book had a sub plot or two that actually farther the main plot along. I don't want to say what my biggest gripes are because I don't want to give anything away.
