the "baseball only" thread

The Red Sox pull off a win. Now they have a chance to take 3 out of 4 from the best team in baseball with Contrares pitching tommorow. It looks like tommorow will be a great game :bouncybou

I was happy this morning to see the final score from SF: Marlins 16, hated jints 4. 😀

A starting pitcher who gives up 5 earned runs doesn't deserve to win (except perhaps in Colorado). He was lucky that the Dodgers' pitching stank worse, that's all.

Never saw Reyes in person before yesterday. Obviously he looked great today.
You can tell me he was lucky all you want Mils, bottom line is he went 7 innings. In fact, those 3 runs he gave up in the 1st inning with his fielders ( Cairo and Beltran ) losing pop ups cost him 3 runs. If his defense did not fail him, he would have only given up 2 runs. It is not like you guys beat him around. Then you blow 2 leads and lose the game. That being said, your team that you predicted to win a World Series has an awful lot of work to do. I expect you to leave Shea today having lost game 3 of this series. But it has been fun Mils. :rotate:

His ERA for the game was 6.43, and he was the winning pitcher. I call that lucky. Unless you can get the official scorer to change that first inning fly ball from a hit to an error, the runs were earned, and that figure stands.

Concerning the Dodgers, I always predict them to win the World Series. I did so in 1988, and I was one of only two people on earth that I know of who were correct that year. (The other was named Lasorda.)

I will admit that the day Gagne had elbow surgery was the day I no longer expected the Dodgers to be in the post season this year.

I will make one obervation today: I have rarely seen such moronic, mean-spirited bastards as the Mets fans around me today. I can't understand why they hate Jeff Kent. When his name was announced in the starting lineup, and every time he came to the plate, they booed him loudly and yelled obscenities. Just what did he do when he was a Met? I can't recall a Buckner-like incident.

Mils in regards to Pedro, luck is always required when playing this sport. Pedro outpitched your staff as Benson outpitched Penny today. It is as simple as that. As far as Kent is concerned, he did nothing when he was a Met. That is probably what he did wrong. He was then traded by the Mets and he became Rogers Hornsby like with his stats. I personally thought it was a dumb trade when the Mets made the trade but that was me. I rarely ever boo an opponent. That is just not me. But Kent was an okay player for the Mets an now he sits on the borderline of being a Hall of Fame player. That is the only reason I can come up with. Other than that I do not know.

The way I see the 3 winning pitchers, Weaver had a game ERA of 7.50 and was lucky to win, Martinez had a game ERA of 6.43 and was lucky to win, and Benson had a game ERA of 0.00 and deserved to win. But feel free to believe that a pitcher who gives up 15 runs while his opposite number gives up 16 is deserving.

That's the way it ended, too.
It made NT and Sadira happy.

It sure did make me happy, but unfortunately it seems Wood may need surgery to fix his shoulder. I think it is better to shut him down, and get him ready for 2006

NT, I do believe that's what Tf4f has been saying right along about K Wood. We can't count on him. He's costing us too much $$$ and time just sitting around. Sorry, my friend, but I think we have to admit to this one and start putting a little more effort in those we may get a few wins out of this year. It won't be the World Series, though. Not this year......

By God, the Cubs are going to get back to the World Series one of these years. I would like to see it atleast once in my lifetime. :rotate:

I would love to see that too. I just don't see it happening this year, especially with Wood hardly playing any games. Even with the games he has played recently, he's not putting up the numbers we expected and need in order for the Cubs to be a challenge to everyone else.

I would like to see the Dodgers back in the World Series, ASAP. But it is not going to happen this year. 🙁

I hate to see all this downing on everyone's teams so I'll put in some good news.

The Red Sox likely have what it takes to go back to the World Series, Just a few more moves they need to make and they can get back there.😀

Of course the White Sox may be a problem in the playoffs if they don't hit a snag soon :ermm:

Just recognizing reality with regard to my team. 🙁 Wait 'til next year. 😀

The trade dealine is approaching rapidly, July 31 is this Sunday. Expect a lot of trade rumors and actual trades this week. 😀

Hey K-Skate - stick it in your ear. Don't spread sunshine on our rainy parade. 😛 LOL

It will be interesting to see which teams still think that they are one trade away from being a contender this year. 😀

Pedro did not give up 15 runs Mils. His defense failed him in the 1st inning. Do you deny that? He gave up 2 runs over the next 6 innings. That is a fact. As a result, Pedro did not pitch as bad as you have made it out to be. It is not like they hit 4 homeruns off of him to account for the 5 runs. Then I would be in full agreement with you that he was extremely luck. But that was not the case. Beltran camped under the ball that fell 10 feet away from him. That is not Pedro's fault. They don't count that as an error because the fielder never touched the ball. # runs scored when 2 outs should have been recorded. You know that. You were there.

At the time, I thought that Beltran camping under where he thought the ball would come down was quite funny. 😛

I notice you are not defending Weaver's performance, and he also gave up 5 earned runs but got a win. So your real quarrel is with the rules of official scoring, which do not allow an error to be charged to Beltran since he never got even close to the ball before it hit the grass.

Did Weaver give up 2 bombs? That was in his control. He threw 2 bad pitches where as all those runs scored in the 1st inning Saturday were the result of misplays by Cairo and Beltran. Do you agree with that?

If I remember correctly, one of the runs scored in the first inning was by a batter who walked. The walk was 100% Pedro's doing. One of the hits that inning was a clean ground ball single. I would agree that two hits were indeed fly balls in the sun.

But what I would agree to has no relevance to the statistics. The runs were all earned.

Under baseaball's actual rules for official scoring, here is his line for the day:

IP 7.0
H 8
R 5
ER 5
BB 2
SO 4
HR 1

That's what he has to live with, fair or not. He is welcome to curse the fielders who lost the fly balls in the sun.
