Hockey World Juniors 2009/2010 - DREAM TEAM!

The 17th works for me so far as I don't know what my work schedule is for one of my jobs at this point for that day and I use Yahoo Web Messenger and have Skype. Now what we can also do is have carsomyr act as the "official" and when someone makes their selection, carsomyr would inform the other participants that whoever made said selection and so on... like the NHL draft. If that was the plan then awesome.

Yeah if you guys inform me of your selections I can update a single post on here with the draft picks right away. It's all good so long as we're on at the same time 🙂

Hey Cars. I will check my schedule tomorrow and let you know what time will work for me. The date is a good one.

Awesome, Tom! 😀 I'm almost more stoked about the draft than I am about the hockey pool itself. XD

I'm easy as far as when goes. My course will be long done by then so I am definitely down.

17th works for me too! :woot: Since I already have most of you on Yahoo, my vote goes for yahoo. Unless things change, I should be pretty flexible about the time... any time in the late afternoon or after should be fine 🙂

Lookin' forward to it for sure! 😀

I guess that settles it then. 😀

For now, we'll try to stick to this date >:3

Update: Not that I think they will have a lot of players we'd want to draft, but Austria has released a preliminary roster as well. Judging from the names listed at Eliteprospects.com (see link in OP) they only have to cut one goalie and one defenseman to finalize it.

Edit: Here's Finland's preliminary roster as well.

Sorry guys, but although I work at night on the 17th I have been swamped with appointments that I cannot change. Unless we can agree on an alternate date I am afraid I will have to pull out as I won't be available from noon pretty much until midnight on the 17th. Sorry all, especially you carsomyr and thanks for the great work.

That's too bad, dude! 🙁 But can't you do the same thing as Poopies and send me a list of "most desired players" you'd like me to draft for you?

Since you are busy until the 21st I'm not sure we can settle on a date later than that (I think it's good if I'm here to oversee the draft, and I'll be away from December 21-26), and we can't go any earlier than the 17th since the rosters won't have been released. :-/

It's up to you how you want to do, but we'd really like you to stick around!

hmmmm... alright I guess I can do that. It's gonna be close sense I think Team Canada's roster will be named Wednesday. I don't really wanna give up the first overall pick so easily... I'll get back to you by tomorrow with my final decision but for right now, I'll stay in.

Well I can understand that. 🙂 I wouldn't give up so easily if I had the first pick either! 😛

Anyways, if you need more time to make a list it might be possible to post-pone the draft until Sunday. Canada's roster may be released tomorrow, but I'm starting to wonder about the other teams! 😕 And since Tom sadly lost his mother yesterday that's another good reason to wait a couple of days more. :/

Right, I talked to Tom as well. He says Thursday is too soon, so I propose we move the draft to Sunday at 20:00 East Coast Time. Then hopefully no one will have to drop out of the hockey pool, and we will have time to really look over the Canadian and American rosters.

If that's the case, I'll give you my list as that still doesn't work for me as I work that night... a very good idea for the delay.

Very good, glad to hear you're still in! Take your time with the list and try to make it 36 names long just in case (6 goalies, 12 defensemen, 18 forwards) 🙂

Sunday should work... agreed its a good idea to put things off a few days 🙂 Glad you're still in BigDogg!

So I'm just wondering, only having a 6 team roster seems a little on the low side... Any chance we can bump it to 12? Unless that's too much to keep track of for you Cars, in which case I'd be willing to help keep track of points and whatnot to ease the load. It's winter break, and I don't have much going on. Let me know what you guys think.

Also, I might be able to make the draft now since you changed it to Sunday... but friends are home from school for break, and I may be out and about. Like I said, I'm a last minute kind of guy.

No prob with keeping track of it, but do you mean we should draft 2 teams each, or make it so that we draft two lines instead of one? Because I doubt we can find 6 more players, especially on such short notice.

Thing is, I set a maximum cap of 10 participants, and that's because the talent pool in the WJC just isn't as deep as on the senior level. For example I think with 12 teams we would have a hard time finding enough good goalies to draft; we'd have to change it so that goalies earned points by simply being the starter in a game, and even that would make some of them only produce one or two points at best.

I think the skill would be similarly watered down with defensemen, as there are only so many of them that are offensive-minded. (But maybe we could make it so that positive +/- at the end of the tournament adds additional points for defensemen?)

If you guys really, REALLY want to, we can add a second line. I like that better than a completely separate team. 🙂 But like I said I personally feel that it will only result in us drafting a bunch of useless pluggers in the late rounds. It will, however, give more of an advantage to the participants who have really done their scouting, so there are positive factors to be considered as well. I'll go either way, what do the rest of you think?

Edit: If we make the change, here's what I suggest.

  1. We draft two lines for our team roster instead of one; 2 goalies, 4 defensemen, 6 forwards.
  2. Goalies get 2p for a win/OT win, 1p for a draw/OT loss (note, no points awarded for a regular loss), 3p for a shutout, and an additional point for every game played. (Must have played at least 1 full period in said game)
  3. Defensemen no longer get a x1,5 bonus to their points production, but at the end of the tournament any defenseman with positive +/- gets that added to his total points produced.
  4. Forwards use the same rules as before.

Does that sound good? I hope it doesn't complicate things too much? I'll be able to keep track of it personally though, so don't worry about that.

Yeah, I didn't mean two teams, I meant having two lines. I found about 60 players I wouldn't mind drafting 😀, and considering there's only 6 of us I thought it could add another fun dimension to the pool. I like your ideas Cars, so it's up to everyone else.

I think having one person that doesn't want to do it is enough to keep it the way it was, since this was such short notice. If we do this for the Olympics though, we should definitely have 2 lines.

Those were my thoughts exactly. 😀 And since this is the first time we're organizing something like this and most of us are complete newbs to the whole hockey pool thing (uh, or at least I am XD) it might be a good idea to keep it simple for that reason as well.

Grrr, people are slow at replying! :cry1:

Some things about the draft tonight

If you have gone to the "Eliteprospects Coverage" link in the OP you will find that it has been updated with a hell of a lot more players for all the rosters: http://www.eliteprospects.com/league_home.php?leagueid=64

This is a great page for checking available players, what stats they have, etc. Just note that the only rosters that have been finalized are Canada and Sweden (Sweden still has to add a final defenseman, but that might take a while)

There are a few players that will still be cut from the other teams, but these probably won't be the type of guys we'd want to draft anyway. If anyone accidentally DOES draft a player that gets cut, you obviously get to replace him ASAP (same as with players who get injured). After the draft I won't be available until the tournament starts, but I'm sure you guys can take care of any such swaps. Just make a post about the change here so everyone can see it. 🙂

I guess that's all for now. See you all tonight!

I have already sent a message to carsomyr but this is to let you all know that I have been far busier with work and Christmas planning these last few days than I expected and didn't get the chance to review the selections nor look at the rosters in their entirety... Therefore, I regret to inform you all that I must officially withdraw from the pool. I wish everyone the best of luck and a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays.

Like I said in the PM, good luck with work, and I hope we'll see you in the Olympics pool instead. There the teams should be announced much earlier, so there will be plenty of time to hold a draft.

But anyway, with one man down I think we might as well draft two lines each (so long as nobody objects) and go with the new rules system. Either way we'll use the modified/updated rules, since it opens up for completely new tactical opportunities for drafting defensemen, and means that everyone should be able to end up with a goalie that produces points.

RAWR! T minus 1 hour! :woot2:

See you all on Yahoo. I will update the OP as the draft goes along.
