the "baseball only" thread

You're welcome! It's obvious you know a lot about baseball, so you're the right person for the job. 😀

A trade between the Padres and the Nationals. Vinny Castilla a third basemen goes to San Diego and Brian Lawrence a right handed starting pitcher goes to Washington. My opinion is that the Nationals got the better end of this deal. I think Lawrence has a live arm while Castilla is on the down-side of his career.

Good news about Mike Scioscia, the Angels coach: his contract's been extended through 2009, with a club option for 2010: 😀 http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/NA...t_id=1264856&vkey=news_ana&fext=.jsp&c_id=ana
That is a great move by the Angels. He is an excellent manager and is well deserving of a contract extension. Scioscia has a shot to be a GREAT manager. I think he will finish career with over 2000 managerial wins. And probably get a couple of more World Series rings as well. I think he is that good. I think the reason he is so good - he is a Dodger.

I can't argue with that last point, he will always be a 1988 World Champion Dodger to me. 😀

I agree with your post. He knows how to manage (not just coach), and the Angels are good enough to make it back to the World Series and win it, especially if the players can stay relatively healthy, and the organization makes the right moves, like possibly landing Paul Konerko. I'm already looking forward to the next few years with Scioscia at the helm. 😀

Meanwhile, I am waiting to see who the Dodgers' new GM and manager are.

I sit back and wait to see what moves the Mets make this off-season. I am happy that they picked up the option on Steve Trachsel. Hopefully that means that we say goodbye to Kaz Ishii. The Mets have lots of starting pitchers. Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, Steve Trachsel, Kris Benson, Jae Seo, Aaron Heilman, Victor Zambrano and Kaz Ishii. They have 8 starting pitchers as of right now. If I were to guess, if they all broke camp in April our starting five would be Martinez,Glavine,Benson,Trachsel and Seo. That would not be a bad starting five.

I was happy that the Dodgers were rid of him, and I did feel sorry for the Mets for taking him on, yes. 😀

I was in downtown St. Louis yesterday and was able to twist a few arms to go inside Busch Stadium one final time. It`s incredible how stripped down the park is. All the seats are gone, and it seems they are selling off anything people are willing to buy including urinals from the restrooms, and Albert Pujol`s locker stall which is selling for the low price of $1000. On Monday two 10,000 pound wrecking balls will start knocking the place down. Busch was the last of the concrete bowl style stadiums that were popular in the 1960`s.

Seats form Ebbits Field have been sold here recently for about $2000. I know a dentist, obviously a Brooklyn Dodger fan, who has 6 of them, collected over the years.

Please!!! How could you feel sorry for us and be happy that someone took your trash at the same time?

OK, I very definitely was happy that the Dodgers were rid of him, that was my predominant emotion. 😀 😀 😀

I felt a twinge of sadness on behalf of the Mets and their fans, and wished that he were going to the hated jints instead. 😛

I am a baseball history buff, and the Brooklyn Dodgers are one of the teams that I have done the most research on. In its day Ebetts Field must have been a fun place to watch a game. But I could buy alot of furniture for $2000.

That price is cheap compared to what some rookie cards in mint condition from HOF players sell for on eBay. If you're rich, there's no limit to what you can spend on baseball memoribilia.

You know one day you , Mils and myself MUST have a conversation. I am a baseball historian buff myself. I could probably learn a lot from the both of you. It is great to talk baseball. :bouncybou

Thanks for the compliment. One of these days I need to make a trip to Cooperstown and visit the hall of fame. They probably will have to kick me out of the place. I gained alot of knowledge about the history of baseball from my grandfather. Back in the 1920`s we had the Cardinals in the National League and the Browns in the American League. (the Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles in 1953) Anyway, my grandfather was a huge fan and went to many games as a young man. He saw Ruth, Gerhig, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Walter Johnson, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and Stan the Man just to name a few. As a boy I would visit him frequently and he would share his experiences with me. He was an old man by then but had a great memory. After he passed away I read quite a few books about baseball history and also have watched many of the documentories that have been on HBO and ESPN. If you are interested in the Brooklyn Dodgers, check out the special about them on ESPN. Its titled "The Last Trolley". Its very well done.

Very interesting. My interest in baseball history began with my father's stories of watching Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in Yankee Stadium. My interest in the Brooklyn Dodgers began as a fan, while they were still in Brooklyn. 😀

I just found a rather interesting article about using math to predict the Cy Young winners:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20051107/sc_space/mathematicianspredictcyyoungwinners

Here's an excerpt:

This year's Cy Young award-winners in baseball will be announced Nov. 8 (American League) and Nov. 10 (National League) by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, whose members vote on the award.

But mathematicians Rebecca Sparks and David Abrahamson, a husband-and-wife team who teach at Rhode Island College, couldn't wait to find out who wins the pitching award. So they developed a math formula that predicts which pitchers will place first through third in Cy Young voting.

They predict Chris Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals and Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees will snag the coveted awards.

It'll be fun to find out if they're right. 😀

I would rather see a way to predict a team's success instead of the outcome of an awards ballot. 😀

So would I, Milagros, but it'll still be interesting to see how accurate (or inaccurate) they are in their predictions. 😀
