Fascinating proposition: handweapons can come in handy when running low on ammo.
I wouldn't suggest relying on one alone, though.
With a handweapon you would be exposing yourself, and effectively allow hostiles to circle and surround you.
Swinging one requires energy, and you'd grow tired soon, even with extensive training.
A ranged weapon, on the other hand, allows you to pick targets and strike them when YOU want, where you want, when you want - without physically endangering yourself until the last possible moment.
I wouldn't suggest a katana anyway: either an axe or a shovel might fare better.
You need mass and striking power.
If we assume zombies feel no pain, it is useless to resort to sharp cutting objects. Better crush or maim them.
As a last ditch weapon, I'd carry a large knife [a tanto for japan lovers...].
You'd be fighting in very close quarters anyway, and you'd have that useful self-kill weapon should odds become too overwhelming.
Better yet... why not a nice chainsaw? 😀
