Don't you get it?

WE'RE AMERICANS! There's ONE America, not two. Why must people continue to care about these foolish labels and act like it matters? They. Do. Not!

This is what I've been trying to say all afternoon. I dig the whole unification thing. I agree with you and anyone else that says it. But look around, there's a huge percentage of people celebrating this as a black victory. It is historical. No doubt. Somebody had to be first and it speaks more to the whole country than it does to him. He didn't put himself in there, the country did. Not because a black guy finally deserved a chance after all these white years, but because he led a better campaign, inspired, and uplifted. So I don't in any way gloss over the significance of his being the first AA in office. I'm proud that the country discounted the issue. But now that he's won, I'd rather not have to hear non-stop "against all odds, this black man broke down another wall in the segregated community." This isn't the Rocky story. He's educated, speaks well and had great chances of winning. Holy fuck... with $650 million to spend, he'd better have shot. I could have won with that.

Mexcellent. I misunderstood the way you said it earlier.

I'm also not going to say that you're wrong for your concerns over taxes. It's just that when you look at all the numbers, the biggest breaks come for the top 5%. Down here at the bottom, things are far less rosy.

I've seen where McCain's economic plans would have risen the income of the average family about 20% more than Obama's... but those persons would then get hit with higher taxes than they would under Obama's plan.

Also, let's not forget that none of these things can be done without the lawmakers' blessing. House elections come up sooner than the president and the Senate, and if things don't go well for the next year or two, then people have the option to put different guys in there.

I wish that we had real choices, instead of "Republican and Democrat". I wish that our politicians represented the actual opinions of the people, rather than forcing us to choose between two different forms of radicalism.

Well done to the people of the United States on this great day.

From Kitchenaut in Great Britain.

Why do you have to be a white conservative and he a black liberal?

Don't you get it?

WE'RE AMERICANS! There's ONE America, not two. Why must people continue to care about these foolish labels and act like it matters? They. Do. Not!

This is the 21st Century. If the USA can grow up out of this "librul vs cunsurvatov" bullshit, then it'll be a better fucking place.

I mean no disrespect to you or your opinions or the things you hold dear, my friends but...

FUCK THIS NOISE!

Let's have a reality check here. Yes, there is one America. I am an American when the chips are down I am not going to ask anyone's political leanings in an emergency. That goes for the friends I make, I really don't care what politics they hold. People are going to have political opinions. Having an opinion will usually put you on one side or the other.

Yes, there are grey areas, but there is an accepted political spectrum. People will generally fall to a varying degree on one side or the other. That placement will be determined by their personal political philosophy. Will they have all the views of a stereotypical liberal or conservative, no. People will have a little of column A and a little column B.

I have a generally conservative political view that does not preclude me from being a completely sociable and normal American. :super_hap

It's naive to think that we're all going to sit around the campfire singing Kumbaya in a political sense.

I totally agree with you on the we're all Americans point. Hyphenated Americans need to drop their hyphens. However, in terms of political philosophy the simple facts can't be ignored. People are what they are.

mess in the middle east

I hope we survive the next for years...

theres no way he's gonna be able to fix the mess in the middle east
or even for that matter, fix the mess here

oh well, i voted for mccain and he lost so whatever i have the right to complain from now on if things get really bad haha

and if things get better with obama, lol then i guess he's ok after all
but I doubt it

you mean the mess that's thousands of years old, or the new mess?

Of course, you'd have to be able to convince people to want to donate $650 million to you first.

Back when the primaries started, Obama was considered kind of a long shot--he had to overcome a lot of obstacles and reduced expectations before finally claiming the nomination. Some of those had to do with not being a longstanding Washington insider, some of those had to do with not being named Clinton, and some of them, indeed, had to do with his race. So while he didn't succeed against all odds, he did succeed against some odds.

Even though I supported McCain, I'm gonna be an adult and learn to like this man's goals and ideals for his country. I'm still a little bummed though. ^^;

Eh, it's unavoidable. Taxes aren't the lynch pin for me. You gotta pay. It's obviously something we consider, but I think foreign policy/standing in the world and taking care of our own health-wise is more important to me. I didn't vote with my taxes much in mind.

I agree with your last statement.

For sure. I was just joking that he had a shitload of money to work with, but obviously you don't buy your way in. He earned it.

I heard this quote on the radio from an obama supporter: Now I wont have to worry about putting gas in my car or paying my morgage, if I help him he's gonna help me....

Welcome to Obamanation

Sounds like Belgian Social security.
Walloons it seems barely need to even pay taxes at this rate, because if they don't they're not prosecuted. There are other priorities.
Flanders has the wealth due to wise investments and a lot of working people. The South (Walloons) and Brussels meanwhile get free cash-handouts.
Hurraaah for democracy and politically instituionalized minority dominion.
And some people wonder why more and more Flemmish become seperatists 😛

Had to comment on this, as I lived over in Belgium for three years and never doubted that the Walloonies were dragging the rest of the people of Belgium down. The village I lived in southwest of Brussels had more people doing nothing for a living all during the day than I could count... it was almost indecent.

But more to the American side of things... I have to agree with others that implied that whomever assumed the Presidency of the United States in 2009 would be behind the eight ball already. Look at what they are inheriting!

So, one of two things will likely happen:

1) The Obama Presidency will turn the country around, and everyone will love them. Based on their success, a second term will be a foredrawn conclusion, and a they will have a favorable nod in the American history books.

2) They will be mired in politics and procedures, the country will set the pace for the rest of the world economy and get mired in recesssion and recovery, and the Obama Presidency will be a four year place holder in Amercian history.

Honestly, I hope the answer is #1. And I am a Republican (yes, I'm obviously a moderate one). But I love and support the country we live in, and wholeheartedly hope things improve.

Wow, I didn't know there were any of you left! As a moderate Democrat(one willing to vote outside party lines if the candidate/issue is presented in a better light by the opposing side), I'd like to shake your hand, Sir! I think we're both becoming like the dinosaurs, which is a saddening thing to see for the country.

As the Jimmy James pointed out, we are all Americans first and foremost, and this still has the potential to be the great land that the rest of the world looks to for both freedom and strength, as long as we can all get beyond the Rev. Wright's and the Rev. Hagee's.

There are still moderate Republicans left that actually are moderate... but, like family values, Brittany Spears, and Crocs, they are fading from memory quickly. But I am glad to see that there are moderate Democrats that will still vote their conscience as well... it lets me know that there is still hope for a way ahead!

America is a great idea that just needs the buy in of the citizens... once that comes back into focus completely and we begin to agree on what we actually need again, instead of who wants one thing more than the other, we'll be just fine.

In the final analysis, I guess the Jimmy James will just have to run in 2012, and we'll see what happens.

I agree. all the obama bin ladin supporters voted for change, with the positive thought the change would be good. However, his changes could be bad. Besides , obama has no balls everyone knows his angry militant white hating wife will be running the show

I think she's hawt. 😍 Okay, maybe not Sarah Palin hawt, but still, I'd tickle National Security secrets right out of her, given the chance. It might take several grueling days. You know, patriotic duty and all that...
:evilthoughts:

I logged in today and found seven new pages in this thread, some of which were filled with hostile and angry posts. The mood has calmed down in the last couple of pages, however, so I don't see the need to close it yet.

Please remember to follow the Rules, especially the "be polite" rule. I hope that it does not become necessary for us to start issuing temp bans, but if the hostility, name-calling and race-baiting don't stop, we might have no other choice.

South-West of Brussels? What was it called?

I'd personally prefer to erase or omit the last 8 years from the books. So while I'm not a radical republican, I'm also just not willing to blindly get behind a guy who hasn't proven anything, good or bad. He's as green as the people in the TT.

Lincoln was green...

True, but the times are a bit more extreme. Lincoln didn't have a trillion dollar deficit to fix, terrorists to hunt, international bad reputation, border security to deal with, so on. Not in any way to diminish his role... he shaped the nation, for sure. But we're giving a person launch codes.

true...but wait until he's done something before you say anything. like it's been said before, mccain would have had the same issues to deal with...his experience won't, i think, have made much of a difference.

Dunno... these guys had two years to explain how they would handle these issues and give reasons why they should be elected. It's not just the fear of the unknown, it's the way these guys came right out and explained how they'd do it that scared people one way or the other. If BO's serious about his tax code, the wealthier people aren't going to wait until their next filing to start bitching. The parents and spouses of soldiers who've been dying for 6 years won't be silent about potentially bringing troops home too early. It's gonna be interesting, for sure.

oh i never said it wouldn't be interesting...it will be! but the wealthier people getting tax cuts are what he's fighting...the lower to middle class people won't have to pay so much if the wealthier people, who can afford it, will do so. it's no good for the wealthier people to get richer and richer if poorer people are getting poorer and poorer.

Maybe if poor people got off their butts and did something that wouldn't happen? Your country has this wonderful system where it's better to do nothing and collect welfare checks - because until you make a certain amount of money, you are in the negative. Rich people who earned their money deserve to keep it and spend it however they wish. To do anything else would be socialism.

Since I have made my point, and many of you will not listen, I will leave you with two words:

Atlas. Shrugged.
