^everyone who works hard deserves to keep their money..not just the rich, but the middle class..my husband is a great example of someone who has worked hard all his life, since highschool in fact..and for his hard earned money to mean nothing in this economic crisis..to lose so much when the stock market fell..i find it heart breaking..i hope that Obama and his staff etc..and all those who will be the new leaders will do something..to bring back social security..so that when my husband and others like him retire, they can actually retire..and not have to work during their golden years..

funny thing..when Clinton left office we were in the green..where are we now? i liked McCain..i might have voted for him, but his negative campaign ads turned me off of him..he was a great war hero..our country owed him much i think..he gave so much..

however..Obama won..so all these arguments really mean naught...

Ugh. Ayn Rand is so yesterday's news.

I know it's been said before, but I'd like to point out too how incredibly hard so many poor people work just to keep from going under. The working poor really has a rough time of it.

Maybe if poor people got off their butts and did something that wouldn't happen? Your country has this wonderful system where it's better to do nothing and collect welfare checks - because until you make a certain amount of money, you are in the negative. Rich people who earned their money deserve to keep it and spend it however they wish. To do anything else would be socialism.

Since I have made my point, and many of you will not listen, I will leave you with two words:

Atlas. Shrugged.
Turn off the Rush Limbaugh bullshit show and get out into the real world.

Welfare was turned into workfare back in Clinton's Administration.

Most rich Americans these days didn't earn their money, they inherited it.

Atlas. Shrugged.

A conservative friend of mine said it best:

"I didn't walk away from the Republican party; the Republican party walked away from me."

Whether you agree or not, change isn't just coming...it's here. The American people have spoken (and overwhelmingly so, I might add). You might as well get used to it, because you've got at least four years of it--and no amount of name-calling, racism, or armchair pundit speculation will alter the course of the election.

Unless, you know, you've got a time machine or something. That...that might work.

As for Ayn Rand, she was a loon. Self-regulating businesses? Ridiculous and impractical. Alan Greenspan has proven that much.

How many 'poor' people in America have cable TV, high speed internet, two or three TVs, loads of junk food in the fridge. We have the richest poor people in the world. How many dropped out of high school, engage in various risky behaviors. I'm sorry... we are not talking sharecroppers, serfs etc. in this day and age. There are many avenues available which do not require depending on the government for a handout.

I routinely and voluntarily give to charity for those who find themselves in a bind not of their own creation. I also do volunteer work. But I am so tired of the national pity party we have. People need to have responsibility for their own lives before asking for assistance from others.

I'm talking about the poor people who are working one or two (or three) jobs, so "depending" on handouts doesn't necessarily apply. But they're still living day-to-day, maybe moving themselves and their kids from a cheap motel to a relative's couch and back again, and it's not a friendly world to them.

I give up: how many are living this fantasy existence you dreamed up?

We have the richest poor people in the world.
Yeah the homeless are so freakin' lucky: sleeping outdoors, dumpster diving for meals. How dare they complain about their lot in life?

Do you lecture to the corporate welfare party the way you lecture to "the national pity party" party? What we give to just one greedy-ass, mismanaged corporation looking for a bailout from the taxpayers could take care of every homeless person in America for life.

I worked in a bank for 8 years giving these "poor" people welfare checks and food stamps. About 5% of them needed it because of bad breaks in life. The rest of them were just riding the system. There's no incentive to get off welfare. Why would you go work for something when you can sit by a mailbox once a month and just wait to be paid? They were disgusting people for the most part - rude, impatient, sense of entitlement.

State law is that they do not hand out food stamps on Saturday. Plus, the ONE thing they are required to do is carry an ID card with their case number to present when getting their free food stamps. But hey... that's too much fucking trouble to remember. They just barge into the bank, which has signs posted everywhere - "FOOD STAMPS WILL NOT BE DISTRIBUTED ON SATURDAY" - and call the tellers names for not handing them out on Saturday. And the more kids you have, the more you get. They were averaging about $1200 for a check and a woman with 3 kids could get about $7-800 in food stamps. Again, there were a few who were embarrassed and humble about it and we were glad to see them get temporary help, but overall... those people are a fucking drain.

Just 6 hours ago, one of those fucking bums took a brick and smashed out three windows on my wife's brand new Mustang to grab a cd case off the front seat. They caught him before he even got off the lot and he was carrying three other people's ID's, credit cards, and some things he stole from two other cars he smashed right before hitting hers. They knew who he was because A) he does it all the time and B) he was still wearing an ID bracelet having just been released from jail. He's lucky he was already in the back of the cop car when I got there. Fucking useless piece of shit left the brick laying on the back seat. Leather seats all scratched, door beat down to the metal, all the windows smashed. Console scratched.

You know what the cops said? Quote: "These are the same pieces of shit that'll say God bless you asking for a dollar or some change and spend all day begging and then turn around and do this to you when you go inside. They're hopeless." And I agree. These fuckers for the most part are where they choose to be. It's easier to take something than it is to... God forbid... go earn it. Any one of them could be emptying trays at McDonald's making $8/hour - about $2 less than my sister in law makes as an athletic trainer after 4 years in college. She should just be a fucking bum and quit because then she could get a free pass on paying taxes and just about break even.

I got here late...

Now a black man of common upbringing has become the President of the United States. Let's let this be proof to the World. Proof of what you ask? Simple.

Proof that there are no races, no sociopolitical differences. Only Human Beings. You are my brothers and sisters, as I am your brother. One world, one race. Let us look at this as a sign that there's one more nation ready to put the prehistoric ideals of color behind us. That difference is no longer something to fear, but something to embrace.

Back when I was coming up, my fellow Americans were just beginning to get behind the idea that black people just might be, well, people. Now we have a black man in the White House (kind of ironic, isn't it!). And a dignified, articulate, smart and driven one at that!

Having said that, I know better than to think that he or anyone else is going to be able to clean up the geopolitical and economic mess left by our current Dear Leader anytime soon. I also know that without grassroots support, he's going to have a very hard time getting things done. He may also be tempted to drop the ball on certain issues, owing to "political realities", unless we keep an eye on him. Look at how he abstained from voting on last summer's FISA bill.

Jimmy James - I remember that Chicago song whose lyrics you posted. At the time, it was pretty scary (the song and the realities of the day). BTW, the song opened with a clip of the "All the world is watching!" chant from the 1968 Chicago Democratic convention.

Ugh. Ayn Rand is so yesterday's news. ...

You know, I once went through a collection of essays by Ms. Rand that I bought years ago at a flea market. One of the things she said in it was that statism needs war. Something for her fans to think about. And while I think that sacrifice for its own sake is rather pointless, I'm still appalled that certain elements of society have used her writings on the alleged virtues of selfishness to justify years of antisocial behavior on their part.

Something I'd like to point out, because so many people here have no idea what they're referring to:

Go to any Socialist (yes, they exist, and in America too) and ask him if Barack Obama is a socialist.

He will laugh at you. And then tell you that Barack Obama is a capitalist.

Americans pay the lowest taxes in the developed world, while at the same time complaining the most about taxes. A system in which "everyone gets to make his way, without regulation" sure sounds good in the theoretical sense. For these people, I suggest you read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and crack open a textbook to the chapter on the Gilded Age and the early twentieth century.

How many times are we going to spout "no regulation on anything, no help to the unfortunate" before we realize that it doesn't work? Businesses strive to make a profit. Making a profit is NOT synonymous with the common good. How many disasters birthed of unregulated business practices do you want us to suffer before accepting the fact that government needs to regulate business?

Now, I'll throw in my 2 cents worth! Having lived through the Viet Nam war years and everything since, I say that I am proud to have voted for Obama. I feel he is the right man for the job at this time in history. Not only will he improve America's image in the eyes of the rest of the world, but he has a "leadership quality" that is hard to define. If you take the time to LISTEN to what he has to say, you will feel a sense of "we are in good hands!" And I am a white man over the age of 50! Damn it! Let's give the man a chance! We are all on this rock hurtling through space together; let's now act like one people! God Bless America!

ah that's so junior high of you...

my father was a die hard republican his entire life..he married into a die hard democratic family...my mom was a democrat, my father a republican...damn imagine if they felt as you all do...there would have been more fighting in my home growing up then there actually was..but they proved that democrats and republicans can live together...

there are poor and then there are "poor"..there are those poor that work harder than anyone just to keep their heads above water...then there are the lazy poor, who take advantage of the government and sit on their lazy butts all day..and i've seen people at the grocery store with food stamps and horror of horrors....a FREAKIN ASS CELL PHONE...gesh..priorities in this country are so in the wrong direction..

and what is this Atlas, shrug book?

The tone of this thread needs to cool down. Its purpose was to celebrate Sen. Obama's election win, not to criticise low-income people. Members who wish to discuss welfare reform or why they dislike Obama should start their own thread rather than trying to derail this one.

and what is this Atlas, shrug book?

It's a novel by Ayn Rand which advocates "rational self-interest": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_Shrugged

Well i'm out of this one and unsubscribing.
I doubt this thread will lead to anything constructive and i don't feel like fueling a fight just for kicks.

Yeah. I'm gonna yank some posts and bail. I've said it before, but I mean it. This place is lame for discussion. It's just a big show and tell for artists and a place to showcase clips. This is what a typical preferred "discussion" looks like here:

"Obama is great."

"Yeah"

"I like him, too."

"Yay Obama."

"McCain got pwned."

"Woot!"

I know there are political forums to go discuss things. It'd be cool to have a conversation outside tickling in a group of "such tight friends and the greatest people ev-ah!" I failed to see where anyone was "race-baiting" yesterday as Val pointed out, but it goes with the nature here: agree or get out. So... later gators. Sorry for any waves I may have made.

when you and Darth say bail...do you mean just from this thread? not the theater i hope...

Dreamed up?

Yeah the homeless are so freakin' lucky: sleeping outdoors, dumpster diving for meals. How dare they complain about their lot in life?

And how many of those homeless are out there due to de-institutionalization? Back in the 70's they just opened the doors and forced many people to try to live on their who can't.

Do you lecture to the corporate welfare party the way you lecture to "the national pity party" party? What we give to just one greedy-ass, mismanaged corporation looking for a bailout from the taxpayers could take care of every homeless person in America for life.

As I recall Barack voted for the bailout as well. I never supported the bailout. McCain flushed his chances down the toilet when he back on his word voted for the bailout. And which party controls the Congress... the Congress which just approved all that corporate welfare? Which party is going to approve the bill which going to bailout GM and Ford? The Democrats... that's who. I am on your side if you want rail against corporate welfare.

My God, in 20 years we are going to have to resurrect Margaret Thatcher, make her a US citizen, elect her President just to have someone to de-nationalize all our industries. It's sad. I was a Republican. I quit the party 2 years ago because they started acting like a bunch of Democrats.

Who is going to pay for all this crap?

.....last call to have this thread locked and have any future discussion about the matter via PMs or IMs...?

Dreamed up?
That's what it read like to me, unless you have some solid evidence that the typical poor American family has all that stuff you listed.
And how many of those homeless are out there due to de-institutionalization? Back in the 70's they just opened the doors and forced many people to try to live on their who can't.
"They" would be your conservative hero Ronald Reagan, who first did that as governor of California and then pushed it through nationwide as President.
I am on your side if you want rail against corporate welfare.
We finally agree. Btw the bailout was bipartisan, your attempt to put the whole thing on the Democrats notwithstanding.
I was a Republican. I quit the party 2 years ago because they started acting like a bunch of Democrats.
Riiiiiiiight. You mean, say, when the GOP stopped being "the party of fiscal responsibility"? I'll explode that fairytale right now.

The last Republican president to balance the budget was Eisenhower. That's right, you gotta go all the way to the 50's to find a fiscally responsible Republican president.

The last two Presidents to balance the budget were Democrats named Johnson and Clinton.

Next.
