After you accept the quest from the man in the house with the black roof, talk with the lady on the pier (the one who you accept the quest to save her daughter from a Tickle Fairy), then go back to the starting area.
When you get back there, you'll have to go back to the place where you encounter a Tickle Fairy for the very first time. After that, head to area right before the lake in the Tickle Woods and fight the Giggle Goblin standing there.
Once you've done that, go to where you remeber the Chuckle Oni appearing.
Thanks - I do recall all that now, but eh, Alzheimer's moment.
My laptop is a worthy old machine that has withstood major viruses. I'd wager the reason behind my slowdowns is some combination of age and clutter of deleted-but-not-really programs. It's a personal thing - I'm certainly not looking for the game to be changed because of it.
And speaking of the game:
Of the revamp, my own play-through has been as the mage. Overall, the whole affair was a lot easier. I've found that spamming tickle wisp and feather fire was sufficient for the entire first chapter. The only one I briefly has a hangup on was the Chuckle Oni. These points aren't particularly bad - most RPG's have limited options and lower difficulty at the beginning. And it was noted by a villager that some later Mamono would be immune to magic...
Focus appears useless - two attacks invariably did more damage for me than a charged one. It is, however, required to break into that beautiful healing spell that no adventuring party should leave home without. The skill tier system looks interesting, though point-buy systems have always encouraged spamming a single "best" power. Jury's still out, but the differing elemental weaknesses and strengths should help on that count. Even more importantly, with only one character, over specialization could lead to disaster against the wrong enemy. I didn't level up to test it at all - just put points in the basics along with a yummy +50 stamina.
As a rule, I hate remakes. I hate trying to edit my own completed work, and I usually want developers to focus on new material rather than trying to make old stuff "better." What really made this great for me was the writing. And not the fappable writing - while deep in the way Inverse said, there were just a few new scenes at the start and the rest was unchanged. I mean the character of the Outsider. Rather than a boring avatar for the player, right at the start were mentioned names and family members, paving the way for future flashbacks and development. Even if not developed, they simply add life to the character beyond immediate concerns. The reaction to situations was also completely natural. It went from:
*Beat monsters by tickling them!
Outsider: Oh...weird. Okay.
to:
*Beat monsters by tickling them!
Outsider: Wait, what? WHAT?!! What the hell is wrong with you people? And you monsters, what the hell is wrong with you? This is crazy! Oh, fuck my ass...NO, NOT LITERALLY!!
The new scenes with the Outsider sitting depressed in the bar and nervous as she tries to go to sleep sat very well with me - it made the person feel human. Her exhaustion after the battle with Venus and paranoia of others also contribute well to the character. Less poetically, these additions also give the game a plot beyond the fap and the battle. Two thumbs up.
Honey Bee also gets a bit more screen time to positive effect. Rather than the tutorial mechanic, her quest has a fairly natural lead-up. Instead of randomly attacking the Outsider for fun and passion, the message is well conveyed that it'd be a good "final test." Three chapters of semi-romantic plot with Honey Bee, and I felt there wasn't much beyond sexual passion and a vague feeling of responsibility between them. After this one, I can really see why the Outsider might fall in love with her. It's neither too cutesy nor too sex-reliant. I "aaaaaawed" when Honey Bee offered to watch over her at night, and I laughed when she admitted it wouldn't entirely be a benign watch.
Oh, and the new sprites and special effects were a nice touch.
Predictably, I'm a big fan of the Giggle Goblin friend. Given that the non-tickle plot has gotten a major facelift, I'm very much looking forward to seeing her in part 2. Also looking forward to moments that I might not quite be expecting, which were the greatest moments in this. And I'm looking forward to everything else as well.
In the meantime, think I'll give DwtD a try as a...slayer or soldier? Sure, let's roll.
