So, playing DwtD with a ranger has been interesting. I don't have a lot of tricks up my sleeve compared to the mage, but the combat has still kept my attention with the tactics needed to make it though the early bosses. Recruited the goblin nice and early, figuring she would be a big help against Calypso. Silly me.
But forget fighting Calypso - here's a word from my spokesman concerning teleportation puzzles:

Had to break out the ol' notebook and pen for this one. And I still managed to try out every single other teleportation circle in there before stepping on the "right" one. My relief at finding Calypso was short lived, as, well, it was Calypso. Maybe there was a trick to beating her - she certainly seemed to have elemental abilities, and a mage could likely find a weakness. Maybe she was weak to ice when she was leo, or whatever. But as a ranger, damned if I could find any chink in the armor. Every spot seemed to do about 30-odd points of damage, making for a damn long fight with her at 2400 hp. Sucked down all my healing items, but I just barely managed to edge her out. It was actually kind of a nice effect - I like the idea of her being a complete match for me, with the winner very much in question even near the end of the battle.
Ended up tickling her to see how the scene came out. I did feel bad (which is good), but damned if I was doing that battle over again. I tend to be a white-hat in these games, so hopefully my Jesus-like Karma will outweigh this one little slip. Also hopefully it won't have any long-term consequences.
Working on Hathor now. It's like hitting a brick wall (or tickling - same effect to the wall), but I haven't done much experimentation as of yet. At least I'll get Spaz for it. Girl can solo the minor bosses, and appears to be quite the necessity in DwtD.
In an unrelated query, how are people building their rangers? I'm at level 4, which means I'm just getting beyond the mandatory stamina-buffs and into the realm of actual options. Mamonology seems to be the big skill, however it also seems that it requires major points invested in observation, a skill with no immediate benefit. Do those who've rolled with the ranger longer than me think it's worth it?
